Intro To Book

I had often thought how great it would be to be a professor, pastor, or anyone else whose job enabled them to take a 6 month sabbatical.

On October 27, 2008 my sabbatical began but it was in the form of Short Term Disability. Just one week earlier, I thought I was a healthy 57 year- old man, enjoying the Journey of Life. I was a disciple of Jesus Christ. I was blessed with a wonderful wife, great sons, and an awesome grandson. I had a job that played to my strengths. I enjoyed hiking, tennis, reading, and life coaching. A trip to the doctor and a simple blood test revealed the shocking news; I was diagnosed with AML, Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

The first miracle occurred immediately. The next day I had an appointment with Dr. Amy Langston at the Winship Cancer Center at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Langston spoke to us for 45 minutes and she very professionally gave us all the details and options about this deadly disease. All I remember her saying was “it is curable, and It will be a marathon.”

I was given the weekend to prepare for 30 days in the hospital. A friend of ours, Jamie Wyatt, was very persistent in urging us to sign up for a Care Page. I didn’t know what a Care Page was at the time, and under the circumstances, I really didn’t care. To satisfy our friend’s desire, I asked my wife Mary Frances to sign us up.

We were admitted to the hospital on Monday like a sheep going to the slaughter. When the day’s activities ended, and Mary Frances and I were sitting there in the hospital room, I meekly asked her, ‘what is the care page?’ She said it was a web site to write information about my condition. Friends and family would be able to keep up with us.

I pulled out my lap top and logged on. I said a short prayer; “God, this was not my plan to be here, but you are in control.” I put my fingers on the keys and asked Him what He wanted me to write. This book, POP, is what God wrote, day by day, in real time. The text comes directly from my Care Page. We did not know it at the time, but the Care Page became a story of; The Power of Collaborative Prayer, Focusing on each Moment of the Journey, and experiencing a series of faith-building miracles. In a short time, there were over 500 POP TEAM members on the Care Page! Only GOD could have done that!

The newly formed POP TEAM responded to my daily Care Page entries with encouraging messages. We have inserted some of these responses in each chapter to share the ‘community’ that we experienced. I thank God that HE gave me the opportunity to experience A Journey in the Light.
